Are you a resident or employee of Berlin, Newington, Rocky Hill, or Wethersfield?  If so, the Central Connecticut Health District (CCHD) invites you to join us as we get healthier and have a little friendly neighborhood competition.  In partnership with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, we are hosting our third annual Step into Summer 2018 Walking Competition!

"Physical Activity is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug."  Dr. Thomas Frieden, Former Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

NOTE:  If you have been trouble with your mobile device double-counting your steps, please scroll down to the FAQs.  The first FAQ should help you.

The Basics:

  1. Registration: Open registration begins on April 16, 2018 and can be accessed through the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Walking Works website (www.walkingworks.com), or through the “WalkingWorks” mobile app, to take part in the competition. Click here for Walking Works Registration Instructions
  2. Event Period: The fun begins on April 29, 2018 and will conclude on June 9, 2018.
  3. Pedometers: A limited number of pedometers will be made available starting on April 13, 2018. Please visit Central Connecticut Health District (CCHD) and through the coordinators listed below.
  4. Tracking: All participants will either wear a pedometer or utilize a tracking device of their choice during the 6-week program to count daily steps.  Steps count toward the town where you work or live.
  5. Participants: This competition is open to all ages – children and families are encouraged to participate!
  6. Closing Ceremony: A closing award ceremony will be held on June 28, 2018 at the Summer Concert Series held in Veterans Memorial Amphitheater at Elm Ridge Park in Rocky Hill.

How It Works:

  1. Each participant must register at walkingworks.com or on the Walking Works mobile app. If you are not registered, your steps will not count
  2. Registered participants should sign-up to be on their town’s team.  Participants can organize teams with family, friends or coworkers, but steps will be tracked by town only.
  3. If you have questions, please contact the assigned person for your town:

Berlin: Lecia Paonessa (

Newington: Nick Pizzoferrato (

Rocky Hill: Rita Chhabra ()

               Wethersfield: Cheryl Pearce ()

  1. You may be contacted via email by your town contact person or by Central Connecticut Health District staff about the competition. Your email or personal information will not be shared outside the purposes of the walking competition.
