CCHD will kick off the festivities on Tuesday, April 3rd during NPHW’s Communicable Disease Day by hosting Public Health Game Night! from 6-9 PM at ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Tabletop Shop’ featuring the board game ‘Pandemic’. ‘Pandemic’ by Z-Man games, is a cooperative board game where players form a team of specialists working together in order to find the cure to four emergent infections threatening regions around the world before they spread, thus preventing the titular Pandemic! During the event we will be assembling cooperative teams of community members and real public health officials from around the state such as health directors, epidemiologists, sanitarians, professors, physicians, researchers and more. Successful teams will be eligible to win copies of Pandemic’s base game. Door prizes will be offered to participants throughout the night. Come interact with the pros and learn about the public health field on our week to shine. Sign up on Facebook or contact Luis Pantoja at to RSVP.

CCHD will collaborate with the Newington Youth Adult Council on Wednesday, April 4th embracing NPHW’s Behavioral Health theme by hosting a Prescription Drug Abuse Seminar from 6-8 PM at Newington High School featuring three special speakers. CCHD’s Director of Health, Charles K. Brown, Jr., will present a brief overview of prescription drug abuse among teens including motivations behind misuse/abuse, methods of access to these drugs, drugs most commonly abused, common myths, and potential red flags indicating a teen may have a problem. Additionally, Allyse Madey, a student enrolled in the School of Business at CCSU, will share her journey involving struggles against alcohol and drug addiction as well as her road to recovery and sobriety. Lastly, Iran Nazario, Founder/President/CEO of the Peace Center of Connecticut, will share his struggles from being a foster child in the custody of The Department of Children and Youth Services, to gang membership and prison. He will share his insight on the challenges youths face and how he has dedicated his life to serving the community through violence prevention and counseling. Light refreshments will be provided. Sign up on Facebook.

Lastly, CCHD will collaborate with our CRCOG partners Tim Malone and Emily Hultquist on Thursday, April 5th embracing NPHW’s Environmental Health theme by hosting a Complete Streets/Active Transportation Workshop from 6-7:30 PM at the Newington Town Hall Auditorium. The National Coalition of Complete Streets defines complete streets as “streets for everyone [that] are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities”. District residents are invited to come and learn about ways streets can be adapted for multi-modal transportation. In addition, the floor will be open for discussion. Sign up on Facebook.
