Evelvated Blood Lead Investigation

The Health District investigates reported cases of elevated blood lead levels (EBLL’s) in children aged 0-15 years old.  An EBLL is confirmed when a venous blood sample shows a lead level equal to or greater than 20 micrograms per deciliter.  Physicians and laboratories are required to report to the local health department any blood lead level equal to or greater than 10 micrograms per deciliter.  The Health District provides educational material on reducing exposure risks when the lead level is found to be between 10 and 20 micrograms per deciliter.

The goal of the investigation is to identify the source of the lead and have it removed.  The District conducts an epidemiological investigation that includes a questionnaire and sampling for all possible lead sources.  Painted surfaces and dust are checked for lead content along with sampling the drinking water and any bare soil areas.  Identified lead sources are ordered to be made safe either by removal or covering.
