Heart Truth Campaign (Stroke Awareness)
This year the Health District received a grant from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Women’s Health to offer stroke screenings for women aged 40-60.
The purpose of the program is to increase awareness of women’s heart disease and its risks. Stroke is the country’s third cause of death and a leading cause of long term disability. Each year about 780,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. On average, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. Each year, about 60,000 more women than men have a stroke. FREE stroke risk assessment program StrokeAlert!
Four screenings will be held on:
Tuesday, May 5, 2009 from 4-7 pm Berlin Peck Memorial Library
234 Kensington Road, Berlin
Thursday, May 7, 2009 from 4-7 pm Cora J. Belden Library
33 Church Street, Rocky Hill
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 from 4-7 pm Wethersfield Public Library
515 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield
Wednesday, May 27, 2009 from 4-7 pm Lucy Robbins Welles Library
95 Cedar Street, Newington
These free screenings are open to woman ages 40-60. At 4:00 pm the Stroke Coordinator from the Stroke Center at the Hospital of Central Connecticut will talk about stroke risk factors and symptom recognition, as well as, stroke risk assessments. The screening includes a blood pressure reading. Each assessment takes about ten minutes.
