Reportable Diseases
Physicians and laboratories are required to report over 60 different reportable diseases to the local health department. The Health District investigates a number of these reportable diseases as they may be associated with a community outbreak, or a local food or water source.
The Health District conducts an epidemiological investigation to identify and eliminate the source of the exposure to ensure others are not at risk of infection. Many cases are found to be associated with foreign travel. The investigation includes identification and control of individuals in high risk occupations (health care, day care or food worker). Outbreak investigations are usually associated with consumption of contaminated food.
Diseases typically investigated by the Health District include: Campylobacteriosis; Clostridium perfringens; Cryptosporidiosis; E. coli; Elevated Blood Lead Levels; Giardiasis; Hepatitis A; Rabies; Salmonellosis; Staphylococcus aureus; and Tuberculosis.
The Health District contracts with VNA Health Care, Inc. for follow-up on reported cases of Tuberculosis. VNA Health Care, Inc. completes a case contact investigation and performs direct observed therapy when necessary.
